Pyrite, also known as “fools gold,” is a widespread and common iron sulfide that is pale brassy yellow in coloration and may contain trace amounts of silver, gold, cobalt and nickel. Pyrite can come in many different appearances. Its crystal aggregates may be large and beautiful, coming in perfect cubes or penetration twins or a number of other wonderful and bizarre crystal forms. Smaller aggregates are pleasing, as well, in that that tend to glisten and sparkle in the light. Pyrite got its name from the greek phrase “pyrite lithos,” which means “stone which strikes fire.” This is because striking it against metal or a hard surface can create sparks. Pyrite provided human society with a great gift: one of its earliest methods of creating flame. Although pyrite is no longer considered to be of high monetary value itself, it retains value as an indicator of the presence of other minerals or metal ores of significant value. In the past, however, it was used for a variety of reasons, including divination, the tricking of naïve prospectors by dishonest mine owners, decorations/ornaments and jewellery, and as a source of sulfur for the production of sulfuric acid during World War II.
Pyrite resonates with the energy of the earth and fire. It is regarded as a mineral of action, will and vitality, and it is said to have the ability to tap into one's potential and and empower him or her with the knowledge and awareness that wealth can be generated through one's own power. It is believed to promote confidence, persistence and defense against negative energies and pollutants. It may bring out a person's boldness and assertiveness when protecting or standing up for other people, the planet, and/or issues within the community. It is said to stimulate the second and third chakras, enhancing the ability to distinguish between facades and what is real, as well as enhancing will power.
Physically, pyrite is believed to activate nourishing energies within the body by drawing on universal energies. It may be good to have around in cases where no resolution has been found, as it is claimed to bring out the cause or root of disease for examination. It is also believed to assist the immune system in the fight against disease and infection by shielding the body from contagious pathogens and pollutants. It has also been used to fight inflammation and fever. It may strengthen the circulatory and respiratory systems by increasing oxygen supply to the blood and alleviating bronchitis and asthma. Wearers also claim that pyrite can prevent and repair DNA damage, assist in bone treatments, combat impotence and infertility in males, and promote healthy endocrine function.
