How to Self-Regulate in Times of Prolonged Uncertainty

BY ESTHER PEREL

In this era of a global pandemic and political unrest, we’re dealing with Prolonged Uncertainty — the sense that, not only do we feel uncertain, we don’t know when our feeling of uncertainty will end.

So, how do we cope?

  1. Identify and Articulate Our Feelings.

Instead of just saying, “I’m stressed!” - try to put your feelings into words. Otherwise, you may unknowingly create a state of Empathic Distress — a strong aversion to the suffering of others, that may cause you to withdraw in order to protect yourself from excessive negative feelings, based on your inability to accept your own.

  2. Do Small, Rapid Interventions.

Pay attention to what you’re paying attention to: news, arguments, and otherwise. Be aware of what you’re consuming and how often. Short term strategies to reset start in your body; a bodied up ritual involving breathing and stretching will help you relax and restore.

  3. Resist Advice to only be Forward Looking.

Now is a time to look back at the stories that have been passed on in our families and cultures that deal with adversity and triumph. Connecting with the past and tying it to the present can give perspective, and encourage us in times of struggle.

  4. Take Action

Nothing can take us out of our depression, guilt, or internalised stress like helping others. It gives us a sense of purpose. Just look around you - educate yourself and seek out opportunities to volunteer, donate and raise awareness for causes that you care about.
